Becoming a better business Analyst - Part 2

<< My career - What next??

In a continuation of my quest to become a better business analyst, the next question I need to answer is:
What do the skills/traits that make a good BA look like when they are performed well?
Right.

Part* of figuring that out comes from the source of the skill itself (in this case, the BABOK® Guide, Version 2.0):

*The other part comes from knowing what these traits look like if performed badly, but in this case, I'm just going to go with measuring myself against the effective performances.

All right. Now that I know how to tell when the underlying competencies of a business analyst are effective, I have to figure out where I fit in this picture.

Typically, I wait for my annual review and listen to people tell me where I need to improve and what I am doing well. This is usually considered to be more accurate than if someone does an assessment of their own skills, however I need to figure this out, and so I will assess myself while keeping in mind the feedback from my latest performance review.

I should also mention here that in my review of the 6 Traits of a Great Business Analyst article, I have decided to separate my efforts into two categories: How to be a better business analyst, and how to look like a good business analyst. One is important in doing a good job and getting good references, the other is important in getting good jobs. Both of which are important if I want to be a successful consulting business analyst, which I do.

At some point in time, I should probably define what I mean by successful - that word has a very different meaning for different people. And how do you know if you are successful if you don't know what successful means for you?

Next up, then:
  1. Assess myself to see where my underlying competencies can be improved.
  2. Determine how to improve where necessary.
  3. Determine how to appear like a good business analyst - on paper and in interviews.
  4. Figure out how to best get good references - I am leaning towards developing a form letter asking people to a) provide a written reference and/or b) if they would be okay if I contacted them in future for a reference as appropriate.
  5. Define what successful means for me.
